Excellent Resources for New Principals
By Dr. Carletta Washington

Congratulations, first year principals!!! You have made it through the first half of the school year! This is something of which you should be very proud!

During Christmas break, I had the opportunity to read some very good professional literature that is worth sharing! These resources were provided by my district and/or recommended by colleagues. These resources allowed me to reflect on my first semester experiences as well as to refine my plans for second semester. I strongly feel that you, too, will find the following resources to be very valuable in completing your first year as a new building principal!

Muhammad, A. (2009). Transforming School Culture: How to Overcome Staff Division.                                             Bloomington, IN: Solution Tree Press.

Sokolosky, V. (2004). Monday Morning Leadership for Women.
                                       Dallas TX: Cornerstone Leadership Institute.

I am currently reading the following literature, and am finding these resources to also be of great value!

Cottrell, D. (2009). Monday Morning Leadership: 8 Mentoring Sessions You Can’t                                   Afford to Miss. Dallas TX: Cornerstone Leadership Institute.

Platt, A. D., Tripp, C. E., Ogden, W., R., & Fraser, R.G. (2000). The Skillful Leader:                                  Confronting Mediocre Teaching. Acton, MA: Ready About Press.
